One of the things I most enjoy about being a new Kindle owner/reader is the ability to instantly download a sample, and, in the process, often dicover an amazing "new" author. DON'T SAY A WORD was such an experience for me. This book was fast paced, fun, suspense-filled and provided surprising twists and turns. A capativating read; I could not put it down. It was such a delight to discover Barbara Freethy. I actually first read SUMMER SECRETS, and was drawn to it because of my love of sailing and the sea. I soon became enthralled with the story line and Barbara's writing style, which so warmly invites one into the story. When I finished it, I immediately searched for another Barbara Freethy novel, thinking that the next one I selected could not possibly be as good as SUMMER SECRETS. What a wonderful surprise to find another of her books that was equally satisfying. Can't wait to download more of Barbara's work. I am looking forward to many more hours of entertainment and reading pleasure! Don't Say A Word (Signet Novel)

Don't Say A Word Barbara Freethy 9780451216762 Books Reviews

I only read 82% of the book. I did like the plot. I did not care for the steamy sex scene. It was a waist of my money. I like to read clean books.
Karen Maute
Very much a Freethy novel...So far, I see this kind of plot and story as her signature style. It's a love story basically, with twists and complications involving some kind of crime or other. It's formulaic, and so it is effective in capturing a reader's attention. I for one, can predict a happy ending, but getting there by reading through all the pages is always the fun part.

The plot deals with a woman engaged to be married who suddenly found herself questioning her roots...One thing led to another and the discoveries made were very surprising, to say the least. Her story spans continents and cultures. She hadn't thought her quest will lead to the revelation of secrets and the unravelling of a crime that was started 25 years ago; that there was still some unfinished business that put her in harm's way. In the end, Of course, everything turned out well. Like other Freethy books, there was always the 'heart' in the story - love between two people and amongst families.

This may be a formulaic story, but I enjoyed it just the same.
This is a thoroughly engrossing story, with not one misstep. The writing is excellent, the characters believable and the story so fascinating I literally could not put it down, as evidenced by the fact that I'm writing this at 2AM. I don't want to be a spoiler so I won't go into details, but this is a story about intrigue, mysteries to be solved and love. Love of parents and family. Oh yeah, there's some romance too, which fits seamlessly into the story. The surprises don't stop. And I wish the story hadn't either. One of the most engrossing books I've read, truly. Read it and see for yourself. I'll be following this author from now on.
I enjoyed the first part of the book--Julia DeMarco is just getting an inkling of the feeling that --maybe--her relationship with her fiance isn't all it should be. When she sees the photograph of the child in a Russian orphanage, and notices how startling is the resemblance between the little girl and herself, Julia begins to question everything about herself and her life to this point.

I found the writing heavy going after that, however. As the story unfolds, there are just too many people with secrets who give Julia the same non-answers over and over. When someone finally does give information, the story takes a wildly improbable turn. Julia has a twin sister, but absolutely no memory of her! The twin, of course, when they finally meet, remembers Julia well. Why would she remember and Julia forget? They both experienced the same traumatic experiences (which was the reason given for Julia's not remembering anything).

From there, things move swiftly but not at all believably. There are many dangling threads left, as though the author just wanted to get finished. It all just left me frustrated and sorely disappointed. Liz-- the sister who whines; Gino--the stepdad who drinks and seems incredibly slow-thinking, despite running a successful restaurant; Michael--the clueless fiance; and on and on. Sorry, Barbara, the premise had such promise!

For those interested, the editing was fine. There weren't any glaring spelling, grammar, or punctuation errors. The sex scenes were well-done; no step by step accounts, but NO doubt about their passion and emotions. I wish more romance authors could do that!
A fast paced romance/mystery book with a lot of suspense with twists in turns in both the mystery and romance. Alex and Julia are very believable, strong characters and with the menagerie of the other characters, brings together the exciting intrigue. It's a story of how one photograph taken many years ago in Russia has connected and in a way, disconnected many lives. Julia meets Alex after she see's a photograph that looks just like her as a child. Alex is the son of the photographer who took that picture many years ago. Julia and Alex are certain this unknown little girl in the photo is Julia and they want to discover how this is all connected to Russia and why all of a sudden their lives are in danger. Very fun and exciting read.
I read the prologue and probably half the first chapter. That's all I needed to know how this story would end. Sure, I'm sure there are twists and turns along the way; but given that this is a romantic thriller (which I should have read what it was before downloading and that would have stopped me right there), knowing exactly what's going to happen in the end within 10 pages of the beginning of the book is just not interesting enough for me to want to read further.
