Invisible James Patterson David Ellis Books Reviews

I could not stop reading! James Patterson always takes his readers on a roller coaster ride, but this was like a roller coaster from the moon to Earth!
Research analyst Emmy Dockery is on suspension from her job at the FBI. She's been investigating a series of fires that have occurred across the country. To the local police, these fires look like carelessness (a burning candle left unattended), and the deaths of the occupants can be attributed to their carelessness.
Because her twin sister was one of the victims, she keeps digging and realizes she is actually investigating a clever and sadistic serial killer.
Emmy is a smart, stubborn, flawed leading character, but She was amazing!
I thought I had this figured out by nearly the end of the book. I was quite surprised.
Wow, I was sure I has it figured. I was ready to brag in my review that although it has taken me longer than some of my previous reads, I has the killer figured out. I was completely and utterly wrong. That's what makes a mystery a 5 star 🌟 rating! The main character was relatable in an aloof kind of way. The details grotesque and cringe worthy. Bone chilling, because true monsters can hide behind a masked facade that seems innocuous enough to allow others to let down their guard and expose a potentially fatal vulnerability. Imagine befriending someone, only to learn that the person has sinister intention. In one hand, it's such a rare occurrence that a person would likely chalk up any weird vibes with paranoia. Mostly, people would perceived as paranoid, not unlike our protagonist Emmy. What's that cliche? Just because you're paranoid, doesn't mean they're not out to get you...What an intoxicating combination of tragedy, mystery, horror and suspense. I would definitely recommend this novel.
This is a total departure for James Patterson. An a nice one! I had grown weary of many of Patterson books, which I felt became very predictable and cookie cutter. Not this one. The story is told through Emmy Dockery, an FBI associate, who is convinced a totally sadistic arsonist and serial killer is on the lose. Emmy's charm is her flaws and her ability to mess up personal relationships. She has a sexist jerk as a boss, who detests Emmy and does not believe her theory. Each fire was determined as natural and not a crime. Emmy's sister, she is convinced, was one of the victims. Swirling all of this we come to meet the killer. This is chilling stuff. A person so evil who plots the most torturous murders and makes it always look as natural causes. Invisible! There are a number of twists in the story and builds up to a stunning conclusion. Suffice it to say, I did not see that one coming. This is a welcome departure for Patterson. One that will stay with you. And I suggest you read it during the day. Never at night in front of a fireplace.
Six out of Five stars.
I know, you can only give five stars. but this is easily a star better than several books I’ve review that deserved five stars. And lest you think I’m simply a hopeless Patterson fanboy, I only gave four stars to the last book of his I reviewed.
What he did right
First of all, a great story and plot. This is a thriller and it was thrilling.
Second, he succeeds where he fail once before. He’s writing first person singular (FPS) as a female. That is a tall order for a male writer. In my humble opinion, he pulls it off in this endeavor.
In the last Patterson book I read, I dinged him a star because in an FPS narrative, he simply jumped, willy nilly, to a Third Party Omnipotent (TPO) narrative. I found that distracting, and frankly cheating. If you write FPS, then you can only tell the reader about things the narrator knows. Andy Weir pulled off a loop hole with the artifact of a journal kept by one of his characters. Half of the book is TPO, while the other half allows us to experience the personal hopes and fears of the journal writer. (FPS)
In this book, Patterson uses a similar artifact in the “Graham sessions.” Not only does he use this to effectively tell us things the the protagonist doesn’t know, he uses it for another purpose. I won’t spoil it in this review, but I will shout from the roof tops that it is pure genius.
The story takes turns that I’d like to say are surprising, but four chapter from the end I had an idea of where the end was going. Two chapter out I was convinced. Even though I had the ending figured out, it was still an enjoyable read, because I wasn’t sure. I felt validated when we got to the end.

Emmy is an FBI annalist. She’s good, but the death of her sister seems to have derailed her. Around the same time her boss retaliates against her because she rejected his inappropriate sexual advances. Now she is desperate to find and stop the killer she believes is responsible for her sister’s death. The killer is brilliant and the powers that be have declared the incidents as accidents. They are not thrilled at the prospect of the embarrassment when the truth comes out.
This broken woman desperately tries to protect the public and get justice for her sister. She turns to an old colleague/lover for help. The end takes a surprising twist that will keep the reader on his toes right up til the last page. This is one of those books that will keep you up past your bedtime, promising “just one more chapter.”
One of the best --- and I'm talking about Patterson! Wow --- scary, even to a hard-core murder mystery fan. This book is a real page-turner -- and because the chapters are so short - you are automatically pulled through the book. I hate predictable novels/books and this book is definitely not predictable. The characters are not flat but fully fleshed out. I retired from teaching high school English this year. My students must read a book each quarter (fiction or non fiction), have a book talk with me, and create a project.. At one time I had six of my kids reading this book --- and not one of them gave away the ending. I recommend Paterson's book especially for kids who don't like to read and it is a pure joy to have them
discuss all the great Patterson books!
I enjoyed this. It was most entertaining and, overall, a good read.
