This is a different view of the vampire legends which is why I enjoyed it. Stay up alnight reading it, at 500 pages is a lot. Especially loved the time period with very little technology. No cellphones. And no jumping into beds like most of the Urban Romance Vampire series that are out there. Looking forward to the next in the series.

A Taste of Blood Wine Blood Wine Sequence Freda Warrington 9781781167052 Books Reviews

This book has been on my To Be Read list for a long time, and aside from the vampire element, it's not actually my usual fare. So when it came time to rad it, I wasn't sure how much I would actually enjoy it. I certainly didn't expect to fall head over heels for it (now I know how Charlotte feels about Karl!), but I did. Holy crap was it GOOD! I expected a story with a slower pace, and while this does have one, it also has a surprising amount of action, especially around the middle with a scene that left me gawking, "Wait, what?! That did NOT just happen!" The shock was so profound because I love the characters. Charlotte is not your typical heroine and I found myself relating a lot to her. And Karl? Karl might follow a few of the classic male vampire tropes (brooding, mysterious, and enigmatic), but he does them well and it never seems like he's a forced character. Their romance is a beautiful, dangerous thing in more ways than one. At first I worried they were moving too fast, but then I continued with the story and watched it grow past the habitual passion and lust. The vampire mythos is very unique and makes me want to know more about their world and what sort of powers they have. I was totally enthralled from start to finish and never felt it was too long, despite being a 500 page beast. I loved this book and absolutely recommend it to anyone looking for their fix of historical vampire romance. You won't be disappointed!
I knew Freda Warrington from "The Court of the Midnight King", a story of Richard III set in a somewhat alternative 15th Century England (along with a soupçon of time-slip – just my cup of tea), but for some reason I had never come across this wonderful series of vampire novels. I borrowed "A Taste of Blood Wine" from a friend – he was reluctant to lend it but I had spotted it on his bookshelf, read the first couple of pages and was now firmly clutching it to my bosom.
I was entranced, and as soon as I finished it I rushed out to by the sequel, "A Dance in Blood Velvet".
The first story opens with a horrifyingly vivid description of World War One trenches during the night, during the lull in the fighting. A vampire walks unhurriedly through no man's land, "an impossible apparition to anyone left alive. [...] The dying he sensed them all around him."
And there, his "maker", Kristian, finds him.
We learn that the vampire, Karl, has been hiding from Kristian for the last four years.
'Why immerse yourself in this horror?'
'Why not?' said Karl.
'Because it's nothing to do with us, this human mess!' Kristian struck the ground. 'We are above it!'
'Are we?' Karl feared Kristian, but would never let the fear win. 'Why shy away from evil, when our kind personifies evil?' [...]
'Do not speak of evil, Karl.' Kristian's dark eyes gleamed. 'The only Devil is mankind. This is the very folly for which we should punish them.'
This is the backdrop. Karl, who sympathises with humanity and sees himself as something evil, and Kristian, who sees humankind as evil and himself and his kind as the instrument of God.
Back to "reality" In London in the early 1920s, the Neville sisters are part of the scene at the Season's parties and dances. Two of them enjoy it all. The third, Charlotte, does not. She wants only to return to Canbridge, where she works alongside her professor father in his laboratory.
Her father, meanwhile, has taken on a new research assistant the vampire Karl, once a cellist in Mozart's Salzburg, but now intent on investigating the mystery of life (and death), hoping he might learn in a laboratory how the interminable might be terminated – his own, or Kristian's – and also hoping to discover something of the true nature of that other dimension known to vampires as the Crystal Ring that exists alongside the dimension in which mere humans live and die.
And so begins one of the great romances of modern literature the shy, studious wallflower and the charismatic, unnaturally handsome vampire.
I don't want to spoil the story for you, but yes, of course, in the sequel, "A Dance in Blood Velvet", Charlotte is a vampire – self-assured now, and living the life of a vampire millionaire with Karl. Home is a secluded chateau in one of the most beautiful parts of Switzerland, and by travelling via the Crystal Ring they can be anywhere in minutes, dining in, say, Venice, before attending the opera in, perhaps, Vienna. Things can only go wrong, and, of course, they do.
The second book is slower than the first, but still gripping and full of the unexpected – including a ballet dancer, Violette, who is just too perfect to be entirely human, and two human mages (I won't call them witches, I'm sorry, for me witches will always be women) who have power even over vampires. Now I am looking forward to reading the the third book, "The Dark Blood of Poppies", which apparently focuses once more on the magical dancer, Violette.
I enjoyed this book. I never knew where it was going to go. I recommended it to friends of mine.
I first read this book in the 1990'. It drew me into a world of beauty and terror so deeply, I've never forgotten its influence. To be reacquainted with it again was amazing, everything I have remembered about it still held true. Imagine my delight when I discovered three more volumes in this series! Well done, Ms. Warrington!
A Taste of Blood Wine has lavish language and well-written characters that leave you thirsty and wanting more. It is a period piece with traditional vampires, along with a touch of the surreal and magic. It isn’t smut, and had an unexpected twist in the middle. It was fun to read as Charlotte turns from being socially awkward to an assertive female lead who doesn’t let men (or anyone) tell her what to do.
I gave this vampire book 5 stars. It's original, fast paced and an excellent read. The characters keep you interested and the story line makes it hard to put down.
I would recommend this book to all those vampire book lovers.
Charlotte feels isolated and lonely, trying to make up for the loss of her mother, and being a scientist alongside her father. She has not been raised to be socially graceful and is very reserved and nervous outside the laboratory .Her closeness to her father has made her more superficial siblings jealous. But, as Charlotte becomes involved with Karl, a vampire who seeks a scientific solution that can be used to kill his ego-maniacal maker, she transforms into someone more confident and willing to defy her family to meet her own needs, and to be with Karl.
